Is JoSAA Sixth Round Only for IITs?

It is clearly written in the official counseling schedule of JoSAA that the sixth round is the last round for IITs. This implies that after the sixth round for IIT seats, there will be no further allotment round, nor will any vacancy round be conducted. IIT counselling will conclude in the sixth round.

This does not mean that there will be no allotment or upgradation in the sixth round for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. The sixth round is held for these institutes too, and there is every possibility of change or upgradation in the seats already allotted.

Why is the 6th Round not Called the ‘Final Round’ for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs?

The 6th round is not considered the final round for NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats under JoSAA counselling, as these are allotted through a separate counselling process later through CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board).

CSAB conducts three additional rounds specifically for those vacant seats that remain vacant after the completion of JoSAA counselling. This is the reason why JoSAA has not called the sixth round final for NIT+ system (NIT, IIIT, GFTI).

Why is there Confusion Among Students?

Many students are assuming that if the JoSAA notification says that the sixth round is “Final Round for IITs”, it means that there will be no more upgrades in the NIT+ system. That is why they are thinking that they should freeze their fifth round seat.

This can be a big mistake. The freeze option should be chosen only by those students who are 100% satisfied with their allotted seat and do not expect any kind of upgrade.

Why are the most Upgrades in the Sixth Round?

The experience of the last several years shows that the most upgrades are seen in the sixth round of JoSAA counseling. There are some important reasons behind this:

  1. IIT Reappearing Students: Many students who decide to give JEE Advanced again next year, give up their allotted seat in IIT or NIT.
  2. Students not joining college: Some students do not participate in the further counseling process and give up their allotted seat.
  3. CSAB Chances: Some students give up their seat in the hope of getting a better option in the CSAB round.

Due to all these situations, there is a shuffling of seats in NIT+ institutes and the chances of a good upgrade in the sixth round increase significantly.

What Should Students Do?

  • Freeze your fifth round allotted seat only if you are completely satisfied with it.
  • If you want a better seat, then wait for the sixth round for upgradation.
  • Students of NIT, IIIT and GFTI should not take the sixth round lightly, because this is the round in which maximum changes take place.
  • After the sixth round, there will be CSAB counseling, which is a golden opportunity, so do participate in that as well.

Conclusion

The sixth round of JoSAA is the final round only for IITs, not for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. For these institutes, there is a possibility of upgradation in the sixth round and after this, there are further opportunities through CSAB counseling.

So students should not be under the illusion that there is no sixth round for the NIT system. It is wise to wait till the sixth round and not choose the freeze option in haste.

All the best for JoSAA Sixth Round!
