Admission to JIPMER and AIIMS through NEET, next year onwards

On Friday, 4th October 2019, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan announced admission to MBBS courses in AIIMS, JIPMER through NEET from 2020

Candidates aspiring for medical courses can get admissions in medical colleges across the country including JIPMER and AIIMS through the common national entrance test, NEET. According to the National Testing Agency, AIIMS and JIPMER were considered more competitive than NEET. This decision came as a relief for students as candidates will now have to prepare for a single exam instead of preparing for three separate exams.

At present, the admissions to the country’s medical colleges are done through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), except AIIMS and JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research). The two premier set of institutions-AIIMS and JIPMER directly under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare-however were allowed to carry out their separate entrance tests.

Vardhan declared “This will help set common standards in the medical education sector in the country.”

Previously, the AIIMS examination pattern included objective type questions based on Reasoning, General Awareness, and Logical Reasoning. Similarly, in JIPMER, objective type questions on logical reasoning and general English were asked. Keeping this in mind, a new provision will be implemented for the common entrance test.

As per the new guidelines, after the NEET examination, there will be a single counseling process for admission in AIIMS, JIPMER and other medical and dental colleges. Top rank students in the NEET exam will be able to select the college on their own choice on the basis of priority. Along with common counseling for MBBS, the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 provides a common final year MBBS exam which will be applicable to all institutes including those of national importance like AIIMS.

NEET UG 2020 exam is proposed to be held on 3rd May. From this examination, students can get admissions in various Medical, Dental, Ayurveda, Homeopathic, and other graduate courses. At present, there are 76978 MBBS seats in 540 allopathic medical colleges across the country. Similarly, there are 26949 BDS seats in 313 dental colleges. Apart from this, 15 AIIMS are operated across the country.
