Branch Change Options Also Closed At 17 NITs
Branch change options available after one year of studies in the country’s top IITs have started closing. It was started by IIT Hyderabad and this year Bombay and Jammu have also stopped this option. After this change, now the admission cut-off in the lower branch of IITs has started increasing. Compared to previous years, All India Rank has increased by 3000 to 4000.
Every year thousands of students with good ranks prefer to take admission in the core branches of top IITs as well as lower branches as compared to the core branches of IITs that opened in the years 2012 and 2017. The reason for this trend was that they were targeting branch upgrade after one year of study. As this option was available, students could take admission in their desired branch of Top IITs on the basis of their CGPA in one year. Now this option has started closing in the country’s top IITs.
In the past, due to the availability of branch upgrade options, the cut-off of lower branches of top IITs used to be very low, but now due to closure of branch change option by top IITs including IIT Bombay, and IIT Hyderabad, students have started preferring lower branch of other top IITs.
As a result, there has been a significant increase in the cut-offs of the Energy, Chemical, Civil, Metallurgy, Environmental Science, Aerospace, and Chemical Engineering branches of IIT Bombay. This year, Environmental Science and Engineering closed at 5401 rank under gender neutral quota and BS Chemistry closed at 9064 rank in open category, while in open category itself, under the female pool quota, these branches closed at 10623 and 14929 rank respectively.
This year, the admission cut-off has increased by 3000 to 4000 AIR in many branches. In such a situation, if other IITs continue to close branch change options in the same manner in the future, then students will not be able to apply for their other branches and may prefer branches of the other IITs like IIT Indore, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Patna, IIT Ropar, IIT Mandi, which opened in 2012 and IIT Palakkad, IIT Dharwad, IIT Tirupati, IIT Goa, and IIT Bhilai which opened in 2017.
Other IITs Will Get Priority
Students seeking admission in core branch used to take admission in lower branch of top IITs due to branch change option but now after closing this option by IIT Bombay, Hyderabad and Jammu, good rankers are seeking admission in other IITs since students are more interested in the core branches of IITs.
The main reason for this is more job and career options in core branches like Computer Science, Electrical, AI and Data Science, and Mechanical engineering. That is why students start giving priority to core branches in new IITs.
