Minimum 25% marks needed for CBSE Class IX, X Students to Pass

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has come up with new guidelines and has made mandatory for class IX students of CBSE board to score a minimum of 25 per cent marks in Summative Assessments (SA) in order to be promoted to the next class. Though this change was introduced last year itself, its effects are just sinking in with students as the SA2 is just a month away.

Before the rule had been passed, a student’s mark sheet included the cumulative scores from two SAs and four formative assessments (FA) for each subject. While that will remain unchanged, students now will also have to ensure they score minimum 15 out of 60 marks in each SA

While for the current academic year, it is applicable only to Std IX, from next year even Std X will come under its purview.

Also, according to a CBSE notice issued last y ear, the students not only have to score at least 25 per cent marks in the summative assessments (SA1+SA2), but they also have to maintain attendance in both the SAs. This means, that just in case, a student is unable to sit for the exam due to illness, he/she will have to reappear for the exam within a stipulated time.

The circular stated that just in case, a student is inclined towards sports, and participates in sports at National/ International level organized by recognized federations/ CBSE / SGFI during the same month of the conduct of SA, he/she can be exempted from one of the SAs, though the student has to take prior approval from the Board for the same.  In such cases, marks obtained in SA1 shall also be indicated for the SA2 by the Board.
