Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition (DHBBC): Eligibility, Schedule, Syllabus, Exam Pattern, Free Sample Papers

Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition is conducted for students of Class VI and IX Std by the ‘Greater Bombay Science Teachers’ Association since 1981. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Spardha (HBBVS) is an excellent attempt to strengthen the foundation for Science Subject among young students by motivating them towards the basic sciences as well as clearing their scientific concepts. With the Homi Bhabha exam, students gain the required confidence for taking up science stream.

The exam is found to be a way of introducing opportunities and careers in the field of science. The DHBBC is mainly based on scientific knowledge acquired by the students up to std. VI and IX. Students from all boards can apply for the competition. Every year, around 40,000 students from Maharashtra, appear for the exam.

Eligibility for Homi Bhabha Exam

To encourage the students to evoke interest in Science subject, Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition is conducted for students of Class 6th and Class 9th. Students from all Boards (SSC / CBSE / ICSE / IB etc.) are evaluated on the basis of their performance in Written Test, Practical Test, and Interview+ Project.

Homi Bhabha Exam Syllabus

For the HBBVS exam, the syllabus depends on the standard of the aspirant. Generally, knowledge-based questions are emphasized for better understanding, reasoning, and application of science. SSC curricula are followed while topics from ICSE, IB and CBSE books are also taken into the syllabus. To inculcate scientific attitude among students, questions related to general knowledge in science covering topics from happenings in the past and science around day to day life is also asked. The snippet of the detailed syllabus:

  1. For Class 6th – Syllabus from Class 4th, 5th, 6th SSC board textbooks and ICSE, IB and CBSE books.
    Weightage-
    a. 10% questions comprise of 4th class syllabus
    b. 20% questions from 5th class syllabus
    c. 60% questions from 6th class syllabus
    d. 10% questions will be testing your Science General knowledge
  2. For Class 9th – Syllabus from Class 7th, 8th, 9th SSC board textbooks and ICSE, IB and CBSE books.
    Weightage –
    a. About 10% questions from Class 7th syllabus
    b. About 20% questions from Class 8th syllabus
    c.  About 60% questions from 9th class syllabus
    d. About 10% questions will be based on General knowledge of Science

Homi Bhabha Exam Pattern

The students are required to face the competition in three phases; Written-test, Practical and Interview session.

Homi Bhabha Exam Selection Process

The first phase of the exam will be of 100 Marks consisting of questions from Physics, Chemistry, Biology. and GK. After the first phase, 7.5% of students get selected and proceed for the practical phase.
The second phase evaluates the student on the basis of the science experiments performed. Top 10% percent of students proceed towards the interview phase.
The final evaluation is done by considering 30% marks of Phase 1 + Marks obtained in Phase 2 and Phase 3.

Dr. Homi Bhabha Balvaidnyanik Competition Scholarships and Awards

a) Top 10% of candidates will be awarded Gold Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs. 3000/-
b) Next 60% of candidates will be awarded Silver Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs.2000/-
c) Remaining candidates will get Bronze Medal, certificate and scholarship of Rs.1000/-
d) Students obtaining 35+ marks will get the passing certificate.

21th July to 28th July 2019 (with late fees)

Written Test (tentative) Saturday, 5th October 2019 (Timings 3.30 p.m. to 5.30 p.m.)
