IIT Roorkee Releases FAQs for JEE Advanced 2026

Important Clarifications on Eligibility, Category Rules, and Special Quota

An important update has been released regarding the JEE Advanced exam, conducted for admission to the country’s top engineering institutes. This year, the exam for the year 2026 will be conducted by IIT Roorkee.

To address the complexities and concerns of students related to the exam, the institute has released 94 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on the official website.

These FAQs include detailed information regarding eligibility criteria, additional subject requirements, tie-breaking rules, category changes, and special quotas.

JEE Advanced is the final stage for admission to the country’s prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology. This exam is open only to students who have previously qualified for the JEE Main exam by achieving the prescribed cut-off. Therefore, the FAQ document will serve as a guide for students.

Eligibility Rules for Additional Subjects

The FAQ issued provides clear guidelines on eligibility for additional subjects, specifically in questions 90 and 91. If a student passed the 12th grade in 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and passed the exam in 2026 with only Mathematics from the same board, they will not be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026.

Conversely, if a student passed the 12th grade in 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology and passed the re-examination in 2026 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, they will be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced 2026.

This clarifies that the combination of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics (PCM) is mandatory for engineering admissions.

Category Changes Prohibited in JEE Main and JEE Advanced

FAQ-13 clarifies that the category declared by a student in JEE Main 2026 cannot be changed in JEE Advanced 2026. For example, if a candidate applies for JEE Main under the EWS category, the same category will be valid for JEE Advanced.

FAQ-14 also clarifies that if a student mistakenly applies for JEE Main 2026 under the EWS category but does not have a valid EWS certificate, they will not be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026 under the EWS category. Such a candidate will be required to qualify based on the General Category cutoff. This rule advises candidates to exercise caution when applying.

Sports and Fine Arts and Culture Excellence Quotas

FAQs 88 and 89 explain the special admission process under the ‘Sports’ and ‘Fine Arts and Culture’ excellence quotas. Admission through these quotas is available only at IIT Madras and IIT Indore.

However, students applying under these special quotas are also required to qualify for the JEE Advanced 2026. Admission will not be granted solely on the basis of sports or cultural excellence.

Admission to UG dual degree or integrated courses at the respective institutions will be possible only if the candidate meets the JEE Advanced eligibility criteria.

Two seats per course are available at IIT Madras and one seat per course at IIT Indore under the Sports Excellence Quota. This opportunity is important for students who have achieved outstanding achievements in sports at the national or international level.

Clear guidelines have also been issued regarding age limits, number of attempts, board exam requirements, and reservation policy. Students are advised to carefully read all FAQs before applying.
