As the sixth and final round of JoSAA counselling ends, many students are wondering if there is any additional counselling process for the seats left vacant in IITs, like the CSAB special round in NITs, IIITs and GFTIs?
This question is asked by thousands of students every year, especially those who do not get their preferred branch in the final round, or those who do not want to join an IIT despite being allotted it.
In this article, we will give clear and detailed information about what happens to the seats in IITs if physical reporting is not done, what happens to the vacant seats and is there any special round for them?
The sixth round of JoSAA counselling is the final round in which the final allotment of seats is done by the IITs.
There are many students who get a branch of an IIT for the first time in the sixth round, but they do not like that branch. Such students do not do physical reporting and leave the seat.
Also, some students who are already not satisfied with a branch also avoid IIT reporting and turn to CSAB counselling to get a better option in NITs or IIITs.

The simple answer is – No. IITs are autonomous institutions and all their seats are filled only through the JoSAA counselling process.
There are a total of 6 rounds in JoSAA counselling and there is no special, spot or physical counselling after the last round. While there is a CSAB special round for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs, there is no such option for IITs.
IITs have clearly stated that they gave students the opportunity to update their options repeatedly during the JoSAA Counselling Process.
They also gave the option of withdrawal and finally gave the final allotment. Now after that process, if any seat remains vacant, they do not adopt any separate process to fill it.
Every year it has been observed that about 40 to 50 seats remain vacant in various IITs, which are either in the open category or reserved categories.
This is because many students do not report, or leave the seat if they do not get the branch of their choice.
No new admission is given on these vacant seats and these seats remain vacant for the entire four years.

CSAB counselling is conducted for NITs, IIITs and GFTIs and this process is considered more technical and complex than JoSAA.
If a student has retained a seat in JoSAA and now wants to participate in CSAB, then he has to fill all the options afresh.
In this counselling, it is very important to decide the correct priority order, understand the seat status and take a timely decision.
There is no special or spot counselling for IITs after the 6th round of JoSAA.
The seats that remain vacant remain vacant for the next four years.
CSAB counselling is only for NITs, IIITs, GFTIs – IITs are not covered under it.
Students should have a clear understanding that there is no extra chance for IIT seats.
We will provide complete guidance and support to students participating in CSAB counselling.
All the best for your future endeavours!
