JEE Main 2020: Eligibility, Schedule, Syllabus, Paper Pattern, Mock Tests & Imp. Dates

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main is the national level undergraduate engineering entrance exam conducted to offer admissions in the undergraduate engineering programmes at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs) across the country. This exam is also the eligibility test for JEE advanced which is the entrance exam for admissions to programmes offered by the IITs.

JEE Main 2020 will be conducted twice, in January and April. It will be organized in two papers – Paper 1 is for B.E & B.Tech and Paper 2 is for B.Arch & B.Planning.

JEE Main 2020 Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must be aware of the eligibility criteria as prescribed by NTA. The eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2020 is as follows:

  • Age Limit: Students with date of birth on or after October 1, 1995, will be eligible. Candidates from reserved categories have been granted age limit relaxation as per Government of India norms.
  • Year of Passing Qualifying Examination: Students who passed their XII or equivalent exam in 2018, 2019 or appearing in 2020 are eligible for applying in JEE Main 2020.
  • Subjects in Qualifying Examination: Students with Physics and Mathematics along with either Chemistry or Biology or Biotechnology are eligible for Paper 1 of JEE Main 2020. For Paper 2, Mathematics is a mandatory subject with 50% aggregate in 5 subjects. Candidates must have 5 subjects in their qualifying paper.
  • Number of Attempts: Students can appear for the exam thrice, that too in consecutive years. Appearing for both the sessions in the same year will be counted as a single attempt.

Note: Candidates must score 75% or above in the qualifying exam or rank in the top 20 percentile in their respective boards to get admission into IIITs/ NITs or CFTIs through JEE Main 2020 score.

JEE Main 2020 Application Process

  • The Application form filling process for the January session will start from 3 September 2019 by the NTA and the April Session registration will start from the second week of 7 February 2020.
  • The complete online registration process will contain various steps – Online Registration, Filling the Application online, Uploading of Images, Payment of Application fee and Printing the Application.
  • The last date to submit the application form online for the January session is 30 September 2019. For the April session, candidates can submit the application until 7 March 2020.
  • Candidates are required to submit only one application form. Multiple application forms from one candidate will get rejected.

JEE Main 2020 Syllabus

The complete NTA JEE Main Syllabus can be checked by the students via online mode. Syllabus of Paper I will contain various topics from the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics studied in the 11th and 12th level.

Paper-II Syllabus will contain topics from the Aptitude, Mathematics and Drawing sections.

JEE Main 2020 Exam Pattern

Paper 1 (B.Tech/B.E.)

  • JEE Main Paper 1 will be held in CBT mode.
  • For January Session, the exam will be conducted from 6 to 11 January 2020
  • For April Session, the exam will be conducted from 3 to 9 April 2020
  • Sections/ Parts:
    • Part I – Physics
    • Part II – Chemistry
    • Part III – Mathematics
  • Number of Questions – 90 questions with each section comprising of 30 questions each.
  • Nature of Questions – Objective type
  • Exam Mode – Choice between Online (CBT)
  • Exam Duration – 3 hours | For candidates with 40% disability – 4 hours
  • Exam Medium – The question papers at all exam centers will be in Hindi and English. For exam centers in Gujarat, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli, the medium of exam will also be available in Gujarati.
  • Marking Scheme – Each question carries 4 marks. For each incorrect answer, 1 mark will be deducted.

Paper 2 (B.Arch/ B.Planning)

  • This paper is a gateway for admission to UG architecture courses.
  • Sections/ Parts:
    • Part I – Mathematics – Objective type questions
    • Part II – Aptitude Test – Objective type questions
    • Part III – Drawing Test – Questions based on drawing
  • Number of Questions – 82 questions.
  • Exam Duration – 3 Hours
  • Exam Medium – Hindi and English
  • Marking Scheme – All questions in Mathematics and Aptitude section have equal weightage i.e. 4 marks each. While questions based on drawing carry a total of 70 marks.
  • Negative Marking – Each question carries 4 marks. For each incorrect answer, 1 mark will be deducted. For JEE Main Drawing Test, marks will be allotted on the basis of candidate’s drawing skills.

JEE Main 2020 Admit Card

JEE Main Admit Card will be released after the registration process is successfully completed. For the January session entrance exam, the admit card will be available from 6 December 2019. Admit card for April session will be released on 16 March 2020.

To download the admit card, candidates have to logon to NTA official website and enter their application number and password.
