The JEE Main 2026 Session 2 Registrations Were Closed on 25 February 2026
JEE Main 2026 is proving to be a historic year for students dreaming of a career in engineering. This year, over 1.6 million candidates applied for the exam, the highest ever.
The growing trend toward technical education after 12th grade has made this entrance exam more competitive than ever.

The exam is being conducted in two phases. Approximately 1.41 million students registered for the January session, while over 205,000 new unique candidates joined the April session.
The total number of applications for both sessions combined has exceeded 1.6 million, demonstrating the continued growth in demand for engineering education. Applications for Session 2 were accepted until February 25, 2026, and form corrections were available on February 27-28.

To correct errors made during the application process, candidates will be given the opportunity to amend certain details.
This included information such as the medium of the question paper, exam city, 10th and 12th grade educational information, gender, and category. This facility will provid relief to many students.

If we look at the trend over the past years, the number of candidates for JEE Main has steadily increased. In 2021, there were approximately 6.52 lakh applications, which increased to approximately 8.7 lakh in 2022 and 8.6 lakh in 2023.
This number rose to over 1.2 million in 2024 and over 1.3 million in 2025. Now, over 1.6 million applications in 2026 indicate that competition is becoming fiercer every year.

Admission to the country’s prestigious institutions such as the National Institutes of Technology, Indian Institutes of Information Technology, and other government-funded technical institutes is obtained through JEE Main, while admission to Indian Institutes of Technology is through JEE Advanced.
A total of approximately 63,000 seats are available, including 18,160 in IITs, 24,525 in NITs, 9,940 in IIITs, and 10,228 in other GFTIs. The number of seats has increased in these coveted engineering education and technical education institutions.
All India Ranks will be released based on the best NTA score from both sessions. Candidates securing the top 2.5 lakh ranks will be eligible for JEE Advanced, which provides admission to IITs.
The requirement for this is a minimum of 75% marks in 12th grade or a place in the top 20 percentile of the respective board. Given the increasing competition, well-planned preparation and regular practice have become more important than ever for students.
