Compared To Last Year, 26 Thousand Less Students Have Participated in JoSAA Counselling This Year
The joint counselling process is going on for more than 57 thousand seats in the top 119 engineering institutes including IITs and NITs of the country. Students can do choice filling and registration till June 28. In the first mock seat allotment, 1 lakh 56 thousand students participated in the JoSAA counselling 2023.
According to the first mock seat allotment issued for joint counselling this year, 1 lakh 55 thousand 778 students participated in the JoSAA counselling 2023, whereas 1 lakh 81 Thousand 914 students had filled their choices in the first mock seat allotment last year. Hence, about 26 thousand fewer students have participated in counselling this year compared to last year.
The major reason for the dip in students’ participation in JoSAA counselling 2023 is believed to be the compulsion of board eligibility for IIT-NIT admission this year since this year it is mandatory for students to have scored 75 percent in the 12th board or to be in the top-20 percentile according to the category of the respective board. Whereas for the last three years, such norms were been relaxed, and 12th passed students were eligible for admission to IIT-NIT.
After the release of the board’s top-20 percentile score and due to the compulsion of 75% eligibility announced earlier, students have stopped taking interest in JoSAA counselling 2023 considering themselves ineligible even after getting a good rank.
After the allotment of seats, the students have to deposit the counselling fee of about Rs 40,000 and after that, the allotted seats are confirmed only after checking the documents. In such a situation, there is every possibility of cancellation of allotment in case of non-fulfilment of eligibility. Due to this, such students have stopped participating in the counselling.
Amit Ahuja said that about two lakh more students have appeared in the JEE-Mains exam this year than last year. This year around 11 lakh 13 thousand students appeared in the examination and 9 lakh 5 thousand students took the examination last year.
In the JEE-Main counselling, all the students are declared qualified for counselling in the JEE Main counselling. Students can do choice filling and registration till June 28.
