CBSE English 2022-23 Curriculum; Included & Deleted Chapters

As per the new curriculum issued by CBSE for the session 2022-23, the syllabus for the English has also changed a bit. Dr. Tushar Nair, Sr. Faculty & Team Lead, English, Allen Career Institute elaborates on the elements and changes of English syllabus for the session 2022-23 which is as follows

Chapters to be Avoided

There are some chapters in the English Syllabus which need to be avoided. Such chapters include:

  • An Elementary School Classroom in a Slum
  • Should Wizard Hit Mommy?
  • Evans Tries an O-Level

Paper Pattern of English

The paper pattern of English comprises 3 sections including section A, section B and section C.

Section A

Reading Skills (20 Marks)

  • In this section, there will be two passages of 10 Marks each.
  • The first passage may be factual, descriptive or literary.
  • The second passage will be case-based and the combined word limit of the two passages will be 700-750 words.
  • Multiple choice or objective-type questions will be asked.

Section B

Creative Writing Skills (20 Marks)

  • In this section there will be Short and Long writing tasks.
  • The first question will be on notice, which will be of 5 Marks. The allocation of marks in notice will be as follows:
Format 1 Marks
Organization of Ideas 1 Marks
Content 2 Marks
Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar 1 Marks
  • The second question will be on Invitation for 5 marks. The allocation of marks will be the same as mentioned for Notice.
  • The third question will be on letter for 5 marks. It can be a job application with biodata or resume or letter to editor (giving suggestions or opinion on issues of public interest). The allocation of marks will be the same as mentioned above.
  • The fourth and last question in this section will be on Article/ Report Writing for 5 marks with the same allocation of marks mentioned above.

Section C

Literature (40 Marks)

This section will have variety of assessment items including Multiple Choice Questions, Objective Type Questions, Short Answer Type Questions and Long Answer Type Questions. The sequence and variety will be as follows:

i. One Poetry extract out of two from Flamingo (6 x 1 = 6 Marks)
ii. One Prose extract out of two from Vistas (4 x 1 = 4 Marks)
iii. One prose extract out of two from Flamingo (6 x 1 = 6 Marks)
i. (a) Five short answer type questions out of six (one from Prose and one from Poetry from Flamingo) to be answered in 40-50 words. (5 x 2 = 10 Marks)
i. (a) Three short answer type questions out of four, from Prose (Vistas), to be answered in 40- 50 words. (2 x 2 = 4 Marks)
i. (a) One Long answer type question, from Prose/Poetry (Flamingo), to be answered in 120-150 words. (1 x 5 = 5 Marks)
i. (a) One Long answer type question, based on the chapters from the book Vistas, to be answered in 120-150 words. (1 x 5 = 5 Marks)
