The past fellows of the KVPY will continue to receive their scholarships
Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), which was a popular scholarship scheme for students with scientific aptitude, will be discontinued from this year (2022) onwards. KVPY will now be subsumed with another scholarship scheme named Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired research-Scholarship for Higher Education (INSPIRE-SHE).
The Department of Science and Technology (DST) of the government of India has made the announcement about the merger of KVPY with INSPIRE-SHE.
DST has explained the reason for the merger in a series of tweets. It said the Merger of KVPY with INSPIRE-SHE has been aimed at utilizing the KVPY resources for providing scholarships to more students.
DST in its tweet said “KVPY has not been abolished. It is subsumed under the SHE component of INSPIRE under which students who were appearing for KVPY examinations will get scholarships through other national-level competitive examinations if they pursue basic & natural science subjects”.
The KVPY program Committee, represented by pioneer scientists of India, found that huge resources (both financial & human) were deployed for conducting KVPY examinations to provide scholarship to only 300 students annually, explained DST in a tweet.
“Therefore, in the larger interest of students, KVPY is subsumed with the INSPIRE-SHE component which will reduce the stress on students of giving another competitive examination. Its implementation cost will be utilized to offer Scholarships to a greater number of talented students”, said the DST tweet.
INSPIRE Scholarship for Higher Education including KVPY has been offering 12000 scholarships/fellowships annually to talented students on a competitive basis.
Current KVPY fellows will continue to receive their fellowships till their terms are completed. After 2022, KVPY will be replaced with the INSPIRE-SHE scholarship scheme.
KVPY is a national-level fellowship program for students who want to make their career in scientific research. The scholarship was given to the successful students of the KVPY fellowship program. KVPY is initiated and funded by the department of science and technology of the Government of India.
Regarding KVPY eligibility, classes 11 and 12 students studying in the first year of basic science courses like BSc, BS, B Stat, B Math, Integrated MSc, and Integrated MS were eligible for the KVPY exam.
Certain top science institutes of the country like The Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs) and The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) were using scores of KVPY for admission to their UG and UG, PG integrated courses.
