The Ministry of Education has officially confirmed that a total of 1,364 new seats have been added in the country’s five newest Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) for the academic session 2025-26.
These seats have been added under undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and PhD programs, significantly expanding the academic capacity of these institutes.
In this expansion, IIT Bhilai has got the highest number of 378 seats, followed by IIT Dharwad with 343, IIT Jammu with 251, IIT Tirupati with 199 and IIT Palakkad with 193 new seats.

A senior official of the Ministry of Education said that this seat increase will be done in a phased manner till 2028-29.
The reason behind this decision was the reports of demand for courses from these institutes and planning of necessary resources, on the basis of which the central government gave approval.
In the Union Budget for 2025-26, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had announced 6,500 additional seats for IITs established after the year 2014.
Of the six new IITs established between 2015-16 – Bhilai, Dharwad, Jammu, Tirupati, Palakkad and Goa – IIT Goa has been excluded from this expansion plan as it has not yet shifted to a permanent campus.
On May 7, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved an investment of ₹11,828.79 crore for expansion of academic and infrastructure in these five IITs.
This investment will be made in a phased manner over the next four years – 2025-26 to 2028-29.
