The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued the National Exit Test Regulations 2023
These NMC Regulations shall come into force at once from the date of their publication in the official Gazette.
In its regulations, NMC said that it will be split into two phases, with NExT Step 1 and NExT Step 2 being held twice annually beginning the next year. The National Exit Test will function as a common qualifying final-year MBBS test, a licensing exam to practice contemporary medicine, a licensing exam for merit-based postgraduate course entrance, and a screening exam for foreign medical graduates who wish to practice in India.
Medical students who pass NExT Step 1 will complete a one-year internship. After an internship, they must pass NExT Step 2 to qualify for a license and registration to practice modern medicine in India and continue to postgraduate study, regardless of their NExT Step 1 score.
If they have passed NExT Step 2 and finish the entire process within 10 years of MBBS admission, medical students may retake the National Exit Test Step 1 in order to increase their scores.
While the NExT Step 1 scores will be taken into consideration when creating a merit list for admission to broad speciality PG seats, the NExT Step 2 examination results will only be reported as “Pass/Fail”. The minimum score required to pass NExT Step 2 is 50% (50 out of 100),
which is equal to half of the highest possible raw score for NExT Step-1. All students who have finished the III or Final MBBS programme at a medical school that has been approved or recognised by the commission are eligible to take the exam.
The document specified that “Regular NExT Step 1 Examinations shall be held twice annually in the months of May and November or any other time as may be notified by the Commission.” “There is no restriction on the number of attempts to appear in NExT Step 1 provided the candidate has passed both NExT Step 1 and NExT Step 2 examination within 10 years of joining the MBBS course.
