Students Did not give Preference Due to No Branch Change Option
JoSAA Counselling process is going on for 59917 seats of 121 institutes including IITs-NITs of the country.
Cutoff of lower branches increased in top IITs According to the data released for the three rounds so far.
This year students did not give preference to lower branches in top IITs Mumbai, Madras, Kharagpur, Hyderabad due to lack of branch change option.
This is why the cutoff of lower branches of these top IITs has increased and students with lower ranks have also got branches in these IITs, whereas till last year all the branches of these IITs used to close at higher ranks.

If we look at the data, the closing AIR of BS Chemistry branch of IIT Bombay was 7065, closing rank of Biological Science of IIT Madras was 10129, closing rank of Applied Geology branch of IIT Kharagpur was 12262, and closing AIR of Industrial Chemistry branch of IIT Hyderabad was 8802. All these closing ranks are from gender neutral pool in open category.
The main reason for the increase in the cutoff rank of the lower branches of these top IITs is the closure of the branch change option in these IITs.
Earlier, students had the option of changing the branch on the basis of their first year performance, due to which many students were upgraded to core branch and good branch in the second year.
Due to this, students used to give more priority to the lower branch of top IITs than the core branch of IITs opened in the year 2012 and 2017.

In such a situation, the cutoff of the lower branch of top IITs used to go down, but now with the closure of this branch change option, the cutoff of the lower branch of many top IITs Mumbai, Madras, Kharagpur, Hyderabad has increased.
Due to which now students with lower ranks are getting admission in these branches. Students are now seen giving preference to other IITs instead of these IITs where there is also an option of branch change.
