The International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) is a prestigious science Olympiad in the world, which is held every year. Its main objective is to encourage school and junior college level students in the field of astronomy and astrophysics. Through this competition, curiosity is encouraged among students to understand the mysteries related to stars, planets, galaxies and the universe.
IOAA was started in 2007 and since then it has become a powerful platform to encourage youth’s interest in science globally. Hundreds of students from dozens of countries participate in it and showcase their scientific ability.
The 18th IOAA was held in Mumbai this year from 11 to 21 August 2025. This event was also special for India because for the first time the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Olympiad was hosted in the country on such a large scale. Students from all over the world participated in this event and showcased their talent in various stages.
This event, organized in collaboration with the Government of India and the Ministry of Science and Technology, was mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself in his popular program Mann Ki Baat. He said that India is now moving ahead at the global level not only in the Olympic Games but also in Olympiad competitions. PM Modi congratulated all the participants and organizers and called it a proud occasion for India.

ALLEN Career Institute located in Kota has been showing its excellence in international competitions of science and mathematics for a long time. This time also, ALLEN’s students overcame the tough challenges of the selection process and reached the final stage and won the gold medal.
ALLEN’s President Vinod Kumawat informed that the selection process of IOAA is completed in several stages:
After this preliminary examination, 124 students of ALLEN were selected for the next stage.
Selected students from all over the country participated in this stage and 27 students from ALLEN made their place.
Here, the students had to undergo intensive training and testing. Many students of ALLEN performed excellently and achieved top ranks.
Finally, on the basis of performance, a five-member Indian team was selected, out of which three students were from ALLEN. This team represented India at the international level and two students – Aarush Mishra and Panini – won gold medals and made ALLEN and the country’s name in history.
In today’s time, the importance of space science and astrophysics is increasing rapidly. In a country like India where Chandrayaan and Gaganyan like continuously succeeding, more scientists and researchers will be needed in the future. In such a situation, competitions like IOAA lay a strong foundation for the students.
Students like Aarush and Panini can play an important role in India’s space research in the future. Their success will inspire future generations to contribute to space research and science.
