AICTE Report 2025: 15% Increase in Engineering Employment

Both Computer Science and Core Branches remain the Centre of Attraction

India’s technical education system is once again proving its relevance. According to the India Skills Report 2025 of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), employment opportunities in the engineering and management sector have increased significantly in the last five years. Engineering in particular still remains the backbone of the country’s skilled workforce.

Computer Science Shines

Computer Science remains the most popular and employment-providing branch in B.Tech. In 2024-25, the placement record of this branch reached 94.46%, making it most attractive for both students and employers.

The ever-increasing demand in areas such as IT, software development, data science, artificial intelligence and cyber security has further strengthened the importance of computer science.

Core Engineering Branches also Strong

It is often believed that core engineering branches such as mechanical, civil, electrical and chemical are losing their charm. But the latest report of AICTE proves this thinking wrong. According to the data—

  • Mechanical Engineering: Out of 1.33 lakh students, 88,954 got jobs in 2024-25. The placement rate was 66.48%.
  • Civil Engineering: Out of 1.04 lakh, 43,620 students were selected, i.e. 41.88% placement.
  • Electrical Engineering: Out of 65,028 students, 38,100 got jobs. The rate was 58.58%.
  • Chemical Engineering: Here the placement rate was recorded at 59.28%.

This shows that there is still a solid demand for core branches in the industry. They remain important in areas like manufacturing, infrastructure, power sector and research-development.

Growing Dominance of Management and Computer Applications

Not just engineering, the fields of Management and Computer Applications are also opening up new employment opportunities.

  • Management Programs: While 1.09 lakh students got jobs in 2020-21, it increased to 1.74 lakh in 2024-25.
  • Computer Applications: This sector registered the fastest growth. From 0.17 lakh in 2020-21, this number increased to 0.67 lakh in 2024-25, i.e. a fourfold increase.

This trend shows that companies now need professionals with multi-dimensional skills.

Overall increase in Employment by 15%

According to the AICTE report, the overall average placement of B.Tech has increased from 7.39 lakh to 8.5 lakh in the last five years.

That is, there has been a 15% increase in employment opportunities. Despite the challenges after COVID-19, the employment scenario has seen rapid improvement.

South India becomes the Hub of Employment

If we look at the regional level in India, South India has performed the best.

  • Tamil Nadu: Provided jobs to 1.67 lakh students alone.
  • Karnataka: More than 80,000 students were placed.
  • Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat: These states also consistently performed well and provided employment to a large number of students.

This proves that South India is still the country’s leading technical education and employment hub. The abundance of IT companies, industrial corridors and startup ecosystem have further increased the employment opportunities here.

Why has Engineering remained the Backbone of Skilled Workforce?

Engineering education is the biggest means of providing skilled workforce to India’s economy. Some of the main reasons for this are—

  1. Diverse employment opportunities: From IT to infrastructure and automobile, there is a demand for engineers in every sector.
  2. Innovation and research: Engineering plays an important role in the development and research of new technologies.
  3. Global demand: Indian engineers get high respect and opportunities abroad as well.
  4. Start-up culture: Engineering graduates are now not only doing jobs, but are also stepping into the field of entrepreneurship.

What is the lesson for Students?

This report gives a clear message to the students that—

  • The shine of computer science remains intact, but the relevance of core engineering branches has not ended either.
  • It is important to upgrade skills and learn new technologies.
  • It can also be beneficial to focus on emerging areas like management and computer applications.
  • Placement possibilities are high in areas like South India, so looking for opportunities there can prove to be beneficial.

AICTE’s India Skills Report 2025 proves that engineering education is still the strongest pillar in India’s employment system.

While Computer Science has further strengthened its position, core branches like Mechanical, Civil, Electrical and Chemical are also standing strong. Also, fields like Management and Computer Applications are growing rapidly.

The future of India’s skilled workforce is based on these branches, and employment opportunities are likely to increase further in the next few years.

This is the right time for students to choose the right branch as per their interest and ability and move towards becoming competitive at the global level.
