Tuhin Dey has Defeated his Disability to Complete B.Tech. Degree
On the occasion of International Day for Persons with Disabilities today, it is a proud moment for ALLEN Career Institute that its 90% disabled student has bagged ‘State Award 2024 in the category of Outstanding Creative Adult Persons with Disabilities’ in his home State, West Bengal.
Department of Women and Child Development and Social welfare has felicitated Tuhin Dey with this momentous award. This State Award has once again refreshed the tale of determination, grit and achievement of Tuhin Dey of Chandipur village in Paschim Mednapur district of West Bengal.
Courage is the most potent weapon one can wield in pursuing self-discovery. It’s often said that the first step to happiness is having a healthy body, as physical pain can erode one’s courage and dash aspirations for progress. In such adversity, the dream of a brighter future can seem elusive. Yet, those who possess the fervor to march forward in the face of adversity are exceptional.
ALLEN student Tuhin Dey is an extraordinary individual, burdened with cerebral palsy and a congenital disorder called Ortho Gryphosis Multiplex. This condition weakens the body’s muscles to the extent that they cannot support its weight. Consequently, Tuhin cannot use his hands, stand on his feet, or move his torso.
However, his determination knows no boundaries. He writes using a pen held in his mouth, operates a mobile phone with his tongue and lips, and has chosen to study alongside regular students, challenging them academically.
Today, Tuhin is the student with 90 percent disability who has completed his B.Tech degree in Information Technology (IT) at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST).
Tuhin is well-versed in programming and general studies, with renowned physicist Stephen Hawking as his role model. Hailing from Midnapore, West Bengal, Tuhin was born into a modest family on March 11, 1999.
He studied at the Central School located on the IIT Kharagpur Campus until the 9th grade and became an NTSE scholar due to his passion for learning. His father, Samiran Dey, worked as a property agent, upon whom the family relied for their livelihood.
Tuhin’s journey has been marked by numerous surgeries and medical interventions in Kolkata and Vellore, including the insertion of plates to straighten his bones and the use of callipers. After completing the 9th grade at the IIT Kharagpur campus, he decided to prepare for engineering entrance exams.
Tuhin himself searched and applied for admission to ALLEN while choosing the best coaching hub, Kota. He achieved a remarkable Category Rank of 438 in JEE-Main.
He believes that if such a physically disabled individual can become a renowned scientist, then he can also make strides in his own journey. This is why he is currently preparing for postgraduate studies in addition to his undergraduate program at IIEST Shibpur.
Tuhin’s mother, expressed her gratitude for the tremendous support they received in Kota, emphasizing that Tuhin would always remember the assistance he received here. Without this support, Tuhin’s dream might not have come true. Kota provided them with a home-like atmosphere and the support of the local community.
While being thousands of kilometers away from home, they felt as though they were never alone. ALLEN was with him every step of the way, with both the faculty and staff ensuring Tuhin’s well-being.
Whether he needed transportation to exams or assistance in daily commutes to the institute, ALLEN made sure all arrangements were in place to accommodate Tuhin’s needs.
