CBSE allows students who took basic math to pursue the subject in classes 11-12

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to allow students who had opted for basic mathematics in the class 10 examination this year to pursue the subject in Class 11. This relaxation is only for the academic year 2020-21, in view of the Covid-19 pandemic

For the first time, the CBSE introduced basic and standard mathematics in the class 10 exams this year. Basic maths were for those who do not want to pursue the subject further, and the standard math was for those who wish to study mathematics in classes 11 and 12.

According to the notification, CBSE board will soon conduct compartment exams for CBSE Class 10 & 12. CBSE stated that all such students who took basic maths and have passed the paper in class 10 board examinations could appear for the CBSE Class 10 compartment examinations for Standard Maths paper, which would be conducted in the same year. If the student clears the standard math compartment paper, he/she would be eligible to take up Mathematics in Class 11.

The final decision – to offer the subject in class 11 would vest with the respective schools. As per the official notice, schools may employ ways to assess the students’ aptitude to pursue the subject in higher secondary.
