CBSE Class 12 Improvement Application Begins

The Number of Students Applying will Increase Due to IIT NIT Eligibility

The country’s largest education board, Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), has started the application process for class 12th improvement marks (Improvement Exam) from today, 9 September. The last date to apply has been fixed as 30 September.

This opportunity is very important for those students who want to get admission in IIT or NIT through engineering entrance exams like JEE Main and JEE Advanced but have not been able to meet the board eligibility criteria.

Application Process of Class 12 Improvement Exam

  • CBSE has clarified that interested students can apply online through Private Candidate Login available on the official website of CBSE.
  • If a student wants to take improvement exam in all five subjects, then he will have to deposit a fee of Rs. 1600.
  • On the other hand, if the student wants to improve in one or more subjects, then he will have to pay a fee of Rs. 320 per subject.
  • According to the notification of CBSE, the improvement examination will be conducted in February, March and April 2026 along with the main board examinations. That is, students will not have to wait for a separate time for the improvement examination.

Why is Improvement Examination Necessary for Admission in IIT and NIT?

Education experts of ALLEN Career Institute say that every year the maximum number of students in JEE Main and JEE Advanced are from CBSE board. From the year 2020 to 2022, due to Corona epidemic and other reasons, the condition of board percentage for admission in IIT and NIT was relaxed.

But from the year 2024, this condition has been re-imposed that the student will either have to score a minimum of 75% marks in the class 12 board examination or be included in the top-20 percentile of his board. Therefore, this improvement exam has become very important for the students who have not been able to fulfill this eligibility.

This rule will remain in force even in 2026, so applying is necessary for all those who want to get admission in engineering institutes in future. Number of students applying will increase. Experts believe that this time the number of students applying for improvement examination will increase significantly.

Last year many students did not apply on time and later they were deprived of admission in IIT and NIT despite getting good ranks in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. This time such students would not want to lose this opportunity under any circumstances and will pay special attention to applying before the deadline.

Which Students Should Give Priority to the Application?

  • JEE aspirant students – Those students whose marks are less than 75% or they could not come in the top-20 percentile.
  • Students applying to foreign universities – Many international universities also put a minimum percentage condition.
  • Students preparing for government jobs or exams in future, where minimum percentage of board eligibility is required.

Points to Note During the Application Process

  • The application can be done only through the official website of CBSE.
  • While applying, the student should choose his subject carefully.
  • No change will be possible after the fee is deposited.
  • The exam dates will be fixed like the main board exam, so students have to prepare accordingly.

CBSE Class 12 Improvement Exam 2026 is a golden opportunity for all those students who want to improve their board marks. Especially those students who want to make a future in the engineering field and aspire to get admission in prestigious institutes like IIT and NIT, they should not miss this opportunity under any circumstances.

Since the last date of application is 30 September, all the eligible students should complete the online application process in time. This time a large number of students will apply, which will increase the competition even more. Therefore, starting preparation from now will prove to be the key to success.
