JEE Main and JEE Advanced are the Entrance Examinations for Premier Engineering Institutes in India
If you are one of the engineering aspirants in India, the chances are that you have heard about JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Both these allow you to qualify for high-ranking engineering schools and are nevertheless different.
Here, we will try to understand the difference between JEE Main and JEE Advanced so that you carry out your preparation in the right manner and take up the right way ahead.
What is the difference between JEE main and JEE advanced anyway? JEE Main and JEE Advanced are the parts of a common entrance test in India. The main difference is that preparing for each of them requires different approaches.
JEE Main is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for engineering aspirants. Class 12 appearing or pass out with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics subject are eligible to take JEE Main Examination.
JEE Main comprises two papers’ namely: Paper 1 and Paper 2. Paper 1 is a Computer Based Test (CBT) that has MCQs as well as Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions, whereas Paper 2 holds Pen paper mode which contains the drawing questions.
All the papers are of a three hours duration period. Let us clarify what scoring and ranking entails. JEE Main has an objective evaluation method wherein the total number of right answers is rewarded while wrong ones attract negative marking.
The best achievers are granted the opportunity to pursue engineering studies in different engineering colleges in the country including NITs and IIITs.
JEE Advanced is a higher level of JEE that is organized by one of the IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) and put a restriction to JEE Main top 2.5 lakh qualified only.
This examination is designed to evaluate the associated principles at a deeper level as well as one’s ability to solve actual problems.
JEE Advanced is an examination that the students are allowed to write up to two times within one’s lifetime in sequential years.
The level of JEE Advanced as compared to that of JEE Main is higher in terms of its complexity. It probes deeper and broader in assessing the understanding that the students have on concepts.
The exam is structured in the form of two papers with three sections each covering Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
The two papers are written the same day with different categories of questions which are multiple choice integers based and matching based.
In order to rank students in JEE Advanced, it is stricter as compared to that in other competitive exams and is based on cloisters in both papers.
Admission to the highly regarded IITs requires students to score well in JEE Advanced.

In the case, an aspirant successfully passes the JEE Advanced, it grants an access to IITs – institutes of a high repute with perfect opportunities for one’s engineering and technology education.
JEE Main requires the completion of the NCERT syllabus with lots of practice on various questions while JEE Advanced, one cannot afford to be satisfied with only the basics, though basic problems have to be solved, there is a deeper understanding of more complicated problems which requires critical comprehension.
Study with a good study schedule along with trial examinations in the form of mock tests followed by revision is quite important.
Indeed, JEE Advanced is compulsory to those wishing to enroll in the IITs.
If you rank among the top few students in JEE Main, you may attempt to appear for JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced is open for those who have qualified JEE Main and have been placed in the top few ranks only.
While taking any examination, it is important to know how to prepare for it. By focusing on the goal, Is the preparation for JEE Advanced and JEE Main different? Yes, JEE preparation is different for JEE Advanced when compared with that of JEE Main.
As compared to JEE Main, JEE Advanced is a step up that, in addition to a profound grasp of advanced concepts, necessitates exceptional problem-solving. In other words, students will have to follow a more concise and detailed preparation plan in order to appear for JEE Advanced.
