Govt Approves ₹11,800 Crore Project to Increase over 6,500 New IIT Seats

These 6500 Seats will be Increased in the 5 New IITs Set up After 2014

The Government of India has taken an important step towards further strengthening technical education in the country. The Union Cabinet has recently approved a comprehensive plan for the expansion of five new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) established after 2014. A total investment of Rs. 11,828.79 Crores will be made on this project in the next four years (2025-26 to 2028-29).

The Institutes that will be Expanded Under this Project

Five IIT institutes of the country will witness increase in its seats under the expansion project. These five IITs are set up after the year 2014. These 5 IITs include:

  1. IIT Tirupati (Andhra Pradesh)
  2. IIT Palakkad (Kerala)
  3. IIT Bhilai (Chhattisgarh)
  4. IIT Jammu (J&K)
  5. IIT Dharwad (Karnataka)

Doubling of Student Capacity

The main objective of this scheme is to increase the combined student strength of these institutes from the current 7,111 to 13,687. This means that about 6,576 new students will get the opportunity to pursue higher education in these prestigious institutes. 1,364 new seats will be added in the first year itself and this number will gradually reach the full capacity in four years.

Steps Towards New Faculty and Research Too

Under this project, 130 new faculty positions have also been approved, which will be at the Professor level (Level 14 or above). This will not only improve the quality of teaching, but will also promote academic research.

In addition, a state-of-the-art Research Park will be established in each new IIT campus. The purpose of these centres is to encourage collaboration between academic institutions and the industry, so that innovation, start-ups and research activities can be accelerated in the country.

Social and Economic Impact

The impact of this expansion plan will not be limited to the education sector only. It will also boost the local economy. Appointment of teachers, researchers and administrative personnel will create direct employment opportunities, while the development of facilities for students and staff will indirectly increase the demand for housing, transport and other services.

Previous Context and Future Direction

It is worth noting that these five IIT institutes started from temporary campuses between 2015 and 2017 and are now fully operational in permanent campuses.

This decision of the government is in line with the announcements in the upcoming Budget 2025-26, in which it was mentioned that the number of IIT students in the country has increased from 65,000 to 1.35 lakhs in the last decade.
