The Second Round Counselling of NEET UG 2025 is Starting from 4 September
A big news has come out from the field of medical education. Before the start of the second round of Counselling of NEET UG 2025, 1970 government MBBS seats and 500 deemed university seats have been increased across the country.
This change is a relief news for lakhs of candidates who dream of getting admission in medical college. This increase in seats is the result of the recent decision taken by the Medical Council Committee (MCC) and the National Medical Commission (NMC).

Complete Details of Increase in Seats
- Letter of Permission (LoP) has been issued to 16 new government medical colleges from NMC. A total of 1000 new MBBS seats have been added in these.
- 970 MBBS seats have been increased in 24 old government medical colleges of the country.
- 500 seats have also been increased in 9 deemed universities.
- Thus, a total of 2470 new seats have been added. Earlier there were 1,18,148 seats in 780 medical colleges across the country, while now this number has increased to 1,20,618.
Second Round Counselling and Distribution of New Seats
- The second round of NEET UG 2025 organized by MCC will start from September 4. According to experts, not all new seats will be added in the central Counselling.
- Out of the increased seats in government medical colleges, only about 295 seats will come under All India Quota (AIQ).
- 500 seats of deemed universities will be included in 100 percent All India quota.
- The remaining 2175 government medical college seats will be allotted through the Counselling process of the states.
- This means that the seats associated with central Counselling will be limited, while most of the increase will be seen in state-level Counselling.
Which States Got the Most Benefit?
According to the list released by NMC, this time a large number of MBBS seats have increased in many states.
- Karnataka – maximum 400 seats increased.
- Madhya Pradesh – 275 seats increased.
- Odisha – 200 seats increased.
- Jammu and Kashmir – 190 new seats added.
- Assam – Increase of 175 seats.
- Punjab, Kerala, Rajasthan – 100-100 seats increased in each state.
- West Bengal and Telangana – Increase of 75-75 seats.
- Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Meghalaya and Uttar Pradesh – 50-50 seats added in each state.
- Andhra Pradesh – Least, only 30 seats increased.
List of New Government Medical Colleges
A total of 1000 seats have been started in 16 new government medical colleges of the country. These also include Tonk and Jaisalmer of Rajasthan, where 50-50 seats have been allotted. Apart from this, the states in which new colleges have been opened include Odisha, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Punjab, Telangana and Uttar Pradesh.
How will the Candidates Benefit
- This increase in seats for NEET UG 2025 candidates will reduce the competition a bit.
- Having more seats means that students who are lower in the merit list will also get a chance.
- Students who have scored slightly lower will now have an increased chance of admission in government colleges.
- The 500 new seats of Deemed University will provide better opportunities for students than the option of private colleges.

Career Counselling expert said that the addition of new seats will especially benefit those students who could not get a seat in the first round. However, he also said that the seats included in the All India quota are limited, so students should also pay equal attention to state-level Counselling.

Since most of the seats are included in the state quota, candidates have to be aware of the Counselling process of their state.
- Check the official website and notifications of state Counselling regularly.
- Complete the document verification and option filling process on time.
- Keep an eye on the cutoff and merit list to select the right college.
There is great news for medical aspirants in NEET UG 2025. The addition of a total of 2470 new seats has increased the chances of admission in both government and deemed universities. However, only limited seats will be added in the central Counselling and most of the seats will be allotted under state Counselling.
Still this increase is a new ray of hope for lakhs of students this year. Now medical aspirants should fill their options wisely during the second round of Counselling and also pay full attention to the state level process.
