The Scenario of Growing Girls’ Admission in IITs is Emerging with the Introduction of Female Super Numerical Seat Pool in 2018
There was a time when engineering studies were considered mainly for boys. The number of girls used to be negligible and their representation in prestigious institutes like IITs was very less. But the picture has completely changed in the last ten years. Now girls are not only showing inclination towards engineering education in large numbers, but are also competing fiercely like boys to get admission in IIT.
Statistics show that while only 847 girl students got admission in IIT in the year 2016, by the year 2025 this number increased to 3664. That is, the number of girls getting admission in IIT has increased almost four times in a decade.
The biggest contribution to this change is the Female Super Numerical Seat Pool implemented from 2018, which gave additional opportunities to girls and made it easier for them to reach top engineering institutes.

Career Counselling expert at ALLEN Career Institute, says that the inclination of girls towards engineering education was strengthened by the government’s policy initiatives. For the first time in 2018, 14% supernumerary seats were added to IITs under the female pool quota. After this, this ratio was increased to 17% in 2019 and to 20% from 2020.
These ever-increasing opportunities had a direct impact on the participation of girl students. While earlier many talented girls were unable to get admission in IIT due to limited seats and high cut-offs, supernumerary seats gave them a chance to remain in the competition and reach their destination.
If we look at the figures, it is clear that after the introduction of female supernumerary seats, there was a sharp jump in the number of girl students.
Year 2016: 847 girl students admitted
Year 2017: 995 girl students
Year 2018: 1852 girl students
Year 2019: 2432 girl students

Year 2023: 3411 girl students
Year 2024: 3495 girl students

ALLEN expert explains that the system of supernumerary seats was started to balance the ratio of students and girls in IITs and to give opportunities to more girls. This made it easier for girls with lower ranks to get admission in IIT. As a result, the confidence of the girl students increased and they started adopting engineering as a career on a large scale.
Today the situation is that there is as much competition on the seats of female pool quota as there is on general seats. For example, this year the cutoff for the general category in Computer Science at IIT Mumbai was 66 All India Rank, while in the female pool quota it reached 369 All India Rank.
The changing nature of engineering education is also an important reason behind the increasing trend of girls towards IIT. Earlier, most of the core branches in engineering such as civil, mechanical, electrical and mining were prominent, in which field work and on-site duty were common. This work style often seemed challenging to the girl students and they kept distance from these areas.
But now times have changed. New technologies and branches such as Data Science, Computer Science, Cloud Computing, Artificial Intelligence, and machine learning have changed the scenario of engineering education.
In these, there is more emphasis on office-based work, design, creation and research. The possibilities of making a career in a safe and modern environment have attracted a large number of girl students towards these courses.
