Why do Toppers Choose old IITs?
According to experts, top rankers mainly prefer the old 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Roorkee, Guwahati). There are many reasons for this:
- Competitive environment – The level of students in old IITs is very high, which creates a better academic and competitive environment.
- Better placement opportunities – Big companies from India and abroad come to these IITs in large numbers and offer packages up to crores of rupees.
- International opportunities – The recommendation of professors of these IITs is considered very important for doing MS or PhD abroad.
- Start-up ecosystem – Old IITs have the best environment and funding available to start a startup.
- Alumni Network – The vast and successful alumni network of the old IITs contributes significantly to the career of the students.
- Brand Value – The name itself of IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and other old IITs is a big attraction for the students.
Why do the New IITs Lag Behind?
Although the new IITs are also trying to provide modern facilities and good faculty, they are still not able to attract top rankers. The reasons behind this are:
- Relatively less placement opportunities
- Less recognition in the industry
- Lack of alumni network
- Limitations of research and international tie-ups
The data of IIT Admission 2025 clearly shows that the first choice of top rankers is still IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. It is followed by IIT Madras and IIT Kanpur. Almost half of the top 1000 students chose only these two institutes. This trend shows that the brand value and opportunities of old IITs are still much higher than new IITs.
In future, if new IITs have to attract top rankers, they will have to focus more on placements, research, startup ecosystem and international exposure.
In this way, the choices of JEE Advanced’s top rankers show that IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi still hold a place among the Indian youth.
