A Major Decision in the Interest of Students
India’s prestigious institutions, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), are known for their high educational standards and excellent placement records. Every year, thousands of students graduate from IITs and find jobs in renowned companies in India and abroad. IITs typically hold placement seasons twice a year.
The first phase takes place in December, while students who are not selected in the first phase get a second chance in April and May after completing their degrees.
However, this time the IITs have taken a very strict and historic step regarding the placement process. Nearly 20 major companies in the country have been blacklisted from IIT campus placements. This decision was taken to protect the future of students and prevent injustice against them.
Over the past few years, especially during the 2025 and 2026 batches, IIT administrations have observed that many students were given job offer letters during placements, but the companies later began reneging on their promises. Engineering students typically join in July or August, but during this time, many companies either cancelled offer letters or reduced the pre-determined CTC and package.
Such incidents not only caused mental stress for students but also severely disrupted their career plans. In many cases, students abandoned other opportunities and ultimately found themselves without any other option.
In light of these serious problems, approximately 15 IITs across the country have collectively decided not to allow such companies to participate in campus placements. Companies that did not provide students with joining offers or reduced their packages at the last minute have been directly blacklisted.
The IITs have clearly stated that any company wishing to hire students from their campuses must fully meet their terms and conditions. Any arbitrariness in the offer letter, PPO (Pre-Placement Offer), or CTC will not be tolerated.
IIT students are considered among the most talented young people in the country, and every major company wants to hire them. This move by the IITs sends a message to companies that students’ careers cannot be compromised. Companies will now have to carefully consider job offers and implement the terms and conditions stated in the offer letter.
This decision is a positive sign not only for IIT students but for engineering students across the country. It is hoped that the placement process will become more transparent and reliable in the future.
The IITs’ blacklisting of 20 major companies from placements is a bold and commendable initiative. This will not only strengthen students’ confidence but also make companies aware of their responsibilities. If this model proves successful, it’s possible that other leading institutions will adopt similar strict rules.
This move could prove to be a major step towards much-needed reform of the Indian education system and placement system.
