Should They Study or Update Their Aadhaar Card First?

The excitement surrounding JEE-Main 2026 has intensified among engineering aspirants across the country.

While a recent notification issued by the National Testing Agency (NTA) confirmed two sessions of the exam, new guidelines related to Aadhaar cards have left millions of students confused.

The application process is scheduled to begin in October, but before that, students face a major challenge: Should they update their Aadhaar card first or focus on their studies?

NTA’s New Guidelines Add to Students’ Trouble

The NTA has clarified in its latest notification that before applying for JEE-Main, every candidate must correct their name, date of birth, photo, address, and father’s name on their Aadhaar card.

These corrections must be in accordance with their Class 10th certificate. Candidates have also been instructed to upload their latest photo and valid category documents.

Career counseling expert at ALLEN Career Institute, said that this notification has created confusion among millions of students across the country. He said,

“The biggest confusion is that the NTA has not clarified the period for which the ‘latest photo’ should be from or what they mean by ‘latest address‘. Will exam centres be determined based on the address on their Aadhaar card this time, or will candidates be able to choose their own exam city as in previous years?”

New Confusion About Uploading Identity Proof

The recently released demo form by the NTA has, for the first time, added a provision for candidates to upload identity proof. In addition to the Aadhaar card, options such as PAN card, passport, DigiLocker, and driving license are provided.

This has raised another question among students:

Will exam centres be allocated based on the address provided in the document uploaded at the time of application?

If this happens, millions of students will need to update their documents before applying, which could significantly complicate and time-consuming the application process.

Counseling expert stated that if the NTA is going to make such a change, it should issue a clarification soon so that students can complete their preparations in time and avoid technical difficulties during the application process.

Problems Like Previous Years May Repeat

Expert explained that a similar situation was also encountered in 2023, when students were asked to select exam centres based on their permanent and local addresses during the JEE-Main and NEET-UG applications.

At that time, a large number of students faced problems due to the old addresses listed on their Aadhaar cards.

The NTA then issued FAQs to provide relief and offered several options for address proof, such as:

Domicile Certificate
Rent Agreement
Passport
Bank Passbook
Ration Card
School ID Card
Electricity or Water Bill

These options provided relief to students at the time of application. However, so far this year, the NTA has only asked for Aadhaar card updates, further fueling confusion.

Growing Student Concerns and Communication Difficulties

Many students across the country have been trying to contact the NTA through phone calls and emails, but have yet to receive a clear or satisfactory response. This has further deepened their anxiety.

This topic has become a topic of discussion among candidates in major preparation centres like Kota. Many students say that processes like Aadhaar updates are distracting them from their studies during this crucial time of exam preparation.

One student said,

“All our attention is now focused on understanding which information will be considered valid in the application form. If any mistakes are made, there is a fear of rejection of the application.”

Challenges before Diwali holidays

The NTA application process is scheduled to begin in mid-October, which will coincide with the Diwali holidays. If Aadhaar cards need to be updated, students may face long queues at Aadhaar service centres and holiday hassles.

Expert said that this time is crucial for students, as they are fully preparing for the first session in November-December. Technical difficulties related to the application could distract them.

Experts Opinion – NTA Should Issue Clear Guidelines

Career counseling experts believe that the NTA should issue a detailed FAQ as soon as possible, clarifying:

What type of photo will be accepted on the Aadhaar card?
What documents will prove the validity of the address?
What will be the process for allocating an exam centre?

If these things are clarified in time, students will be able to apply seamlessly and will not waste time on additional formalities.

Excitement surrounding JEE-Main 2026 is also growing, along with confusion. While students are busy preparing for the exam, the new requirements related to Aadhaar cards have posed a new challenge for them.

Education experts believe that the NTA should address students’ needs and ensure that they are prepared for the exam.

In the best interest of the students, the situation should be clarified soon, so that lakhs of candidates can complete the application process without any stress or confusion and can concentrate fully on their exam preparation.
