There will be an Increase of Approximately 10,000 Students Per Shift in 2026

The January session of JEE Main 2026 is going to be extremely important for millions of students across the country. Considering the trend over the past several years, it is almost certain that this time too, the JEE Main exam will be held between January 21st and 30th.

‘It is likely that the exam will be conducted in a total of 10 shifts over five consecutive days, i.e., two shifts per day.

JEE Main 2026 Registration: The Highest Number Ever

This year, registrations for JEE Main January 2026 have broken all previous records. A total of approximately 14.48 lakh registration numbers were generated.

However, as every year, there are some students who simply fill out the form but do not pay the fees. The number of such dummy or fake registrations typically ranges between 30,000 and 35,000.

Based on this, it is believed that approximately 14.10 lakh students have actually paid the fees and confirmed their registration for JEE Main 2026.

Estimated Number of Students Appearing for the Exam

Trends over the past several years indicate that approximately 95 percent of students who fill out the application form actually appear for the exam. If this trend is applied to 2026, it can be estimated that approximately 13.40 lakh students will appear for the JEE Main 2026 January session.

This figure clearly indicates that the level of competition this time is going to be tougher than ever before.

JEE Main 2026: How many students will compete in each shift

If the exam is conducted in 10 shifts over five days, the total number of candidates will be approximately equally distributed among the shifts. In this scenario:

Number of students per shift: Approximately 1.33 to 1.34 lakh
Per day (two shifts combined): Approximately 2.65 to 2.70 lakh students

This means that in each shift, you will have to compete for your rank among over 1.25 lakh students.

Comparison with last year (JEE Main 2025)

If we compare the JEE Main 2025 data, the situation was as follows:

Total registrations: Approximately 13.10 lakh
Students appearing for the exam: Approximately 12.58 lakh
Students per shift: Approximately 1.25 lakh

Clearly, there will be an increase of approximately 10,000 students per shift in 2026. This is why the level of competition will be more intense this time in each shift.

Potential Impact of Increased Competition on Cutoffs

The increased number of students could have a direct impact on the JEE Main 2026 cutoff. As the number of candidates per shift and per day increases, higher marks are required to reach a good percentile. Consequently, the cutoffs for General, OBC, EWS, and other categories may change.

However, the final impact on cutoffs will also depend on the difficulty level of the paper, shift-wise normalization, and student performance.

The January session of JEE Main 2026 could prove to be the most competitive yet. Record registrations, a large number of students taking the exam, and increased competition in each shift clearly indicate that any lack of preparation this time could prove costly.
