The National Testing Agency (NTA) released crucial information late Friday night, addressing the concerns of students regarding discrepancies observed in the January session of the country’s biggest engineering entrance exam, JEE-Main.

The NTA disclosed the number of students appearing in each shift of the JEE-Main 2024 exam, along with their percentile scores. This clarification aims to ensure transparency in the result presentation. Following demands from students and parents, NTA decided to release this data.

Discrepancies in Percentile Scores

This year, despite good scores in the initial shifts of the JEE-Main 2024 exam, the percentile scores did not meet expectations. Conversely, in the final days’ shifts, despite lower scores, the percentile scores were comparatively better.

This has led to confusion among students regarding the disparity between the number of students appearing in the initial shifts versus the final shifts. Typically, an equal number of students participate in each session of the JEE-Main exam. Hence, the significant difference in the number of students appearing in different shifts has raised questions.

JEE-Main 2024 January Exam Overview:

The JEE-Main exam for B.E./B.Tech was conducted between January 27 and February 1 in 10 shifts. A total of 1,221,624 students registered for the B.E./B.Tech exam, out of which 1,170,048 appeared. Among the total examinees, there were 788,234 male students and 381,808 female students.

Shift-wise Data of JEE-Main 2024 January Session

The exam took place across 544 examination centers in 291 cities within the country, along with 21 cities outside India. Besides Hindi and English, the exam was conducted in 13 regional languages.

Category-wise Participation:

Out of the total 1,170,048 examinees, the distribution based on categories is as follows:

  • General: 392,640
  • EWS: 150,693
  • OBC-NCL: 474,986
  • SC: 113,509
  • ST: 38,220

With this, 95.8% of students appeared for the exam, signifying a high participation rate.
