‘Coaching City’ Regains Its Momentum
Kota, Rajasthan, appears to be once again solidifying its identity as the country’s educational capital. With the commencement of the 2026–27 academic session, coaching institutes here have recorded a 20 to 25 percent increase in admissions.
This surge is not only a positive sign for the education sector but is also infusing new energy into the city’s economy and local life.
After a dip in student numbers over the past few years, vibrancy has now returned to Kota. From the railway station to coaching institutes, hostels, PGs, and messes—crowds of students and parents are visible everywhere.
According to experts, this shift signals Kota’s “comeback,” a development that has also generated great enthusiasm among the city’s residents.
In the post-COVID year of 2022, approximately 200,000 students arrived in Kota. Subsequently, in 2023, this number dropped to 160,000.
The figure fell further to 145,000 in 2024 and reached a low of around 125,000 in 2025. However, in 2026, an increase in student numbers is being observed once again—a positive sign for the city.
Kota’s greatest strength lies in its affordable and convenient infrastructure. Compared to the country’s major metropolitan cities, students here receive superior amenities at a lower cost.
While living and dining expenses in other cities can reach anywhere from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 per month, these very same facilities are available in Kota for just ₹5,000 to ₹10,000.
In the post-COVID period, infrastructure was developed within the city to accommodate over 200,000 students.
Currently, due to a lower number of students, there is an abundance of available hostels and PG accommodations; consequently, rental rates are approximately half of those found in other cities.
This is precisely why Kota continues to remain the most affordable option for students today.
For a long time, Kota has consistently delivered spectacular results in examinations such as the IIT-JEE and NEET-UG.
Every year, a large number of students from this city secure top ranks. According to estimates, one in every four students admitted to the country’s IITs and AIIMS institutions has a connection to Kota.
Over the past two years, the All India Rank 1 in JEE-Advanced has been secured by classroom students from Kota.
Furthermore, nearly half of the students within the top 100 ranks hail from Kota’s coaching institutes. Students from this city are also bringing glory to the nation in international Olympiads.
Kota’s academic environment constantly motivates students to stay focused on their studies.
Here, talented students from across the country prepare together, naturally fostering a spirit of national-level competition. This environment provides students with the opportunity to identify their weaknesses and work on improving them.
Over the last 40 years, Kota has provided coaching to more than 5 million students. Having studied here, hundreds of thousands of students are today working as engineers and doctors both within India and abroad.
In the last 25 years alone, 31 All India Rank 1 holders in JEE and NEET have emerged from Kota—a figure higher than that of any other city.
The results for the year 2026 have also been encouraging. In the January session of JEE-Main, 12 students achieved a perfect 100 percentile score, eight of whom belonged to a leading coaching institute in Kota.
In Kota, caring for students has evolved into a cherished tradition. Here, it is not just the coaching institutes—the district administration, police force, hostel operators, auto-rickshaw drivers, and even the general public remain ever-ready to extend their support to the students.
This collective effort makes the city a safe and conducive environment for students. Special Arrangements for Parenting and Orientation Sessions
A unique feature of Kota is that special parenting sessions are organized here, catering not only to students but also to their parents.
During these sessions, experts guide parents on how to understand their children’s behavior and provide them with appropriate direction and guidance.
The coaching system in Kota incorporates real-time evaluation of students through regular tests and rankings.
This provides students with an accurate assessment of their preparation level, enabling them to identify and rectify their weaknesses in a timely manner.
The coaching institutes here periodically update their teaching methodologies.
The curriculum is planned at a micro-level and taught in a phased manner; this approach strengthens the students’ foundation and enables them to develop a comprehensive understanding ranging from basic fundamentals to advanced concepts.
In Kota, the focus has now expanded beyond academics to place special emphasis on the mental well-being of students.
Regular counselling sessions are conducted to help students manage stress effectively and maintain their concentration on their studies.
According to Rajesh Maheshwari, Director of a leading coaching institute, Kota offers students all the necessary amenities—affordable infrastructure, experienced faculty, a safe environment, and a competitive atmosphere.
The prevailing environment here naturally motivates students to dedicate themselves to their studies.
A parent from Imphal, Manipur, Ajay Kumar remarks that they had already planned to send their child to Kota; upon arriving here, they encountered a truly positive environment.
According to a student from Begusarai, Bihar, Om Kumar Kota is an extremely safe and tranquil city where an academic atmosphere is palpable everywhere.
A student from Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Bhavesh asserts that there could be no better place than Kota for preparing for engineering and medical entrance examinations.
Meanwhile, a parent from Uttar Pradesh, Dr Anurag Singh believes that while much is said about Kota, the true reality is only understood upon visiting in person—the educational environment here is distinctly different from, and superior to, that of other cities.
Kota appears to be regaining its former momentum once again. Affordable amenities, exceptional results, and a robust academic environment set it apart from other cities.
The surge in admissions for the 2026-27 session serves as a clear indication that Kota’s luster remains undimmed, and that it is poised to emerge even stronger in the times to come.
