On the basis of the results of NEET UG exam conducted by National Testing Agency, apart from medical, counseling of dental AYUSH and nursing is also underway.
AYUSH counseling is being done for admission in Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS), Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS), Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS), Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yoga Science (BNYS) and Bachelor of Siddha Medicine and Surgery (BSMS), but there is no interest of toppers candidates in these courses.
The condition of admission in undergraduate courses is miserable. There is no enthusiasm and interest among the candidates to take admission in these undergraduate courses.
On analyzing the data of All India 15% Quota AYUSH Counseling being organized on the basis of NEET UG 2024 merit list, it is revealed that out of the top 50 thousand merit candidates, only 638 have applied for AYUSH courses.
It is clear from these figures that the topper candidates do not see a future in the courses of Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy.
Due to the lack of position, prestige and money, these courses seem ineffective. The current situation is that the candidate takes admission in these courses only and only in the situation when his chances of admission in MBBS course are completely over.
Dev Sharma says that this ministry of the Government of India is making efforts to promote Indian medical systems, but these figures are exposing the truth of the actual situation. It seems that this effort is not effective.
On analyzing the allocation list of Central AYUSH Counseling Round 3, it is revealed that the number of candidates applying from the top 30 thousand rank is only 125, while this number reaches 410 in the top 40 thousand and 638 in the top 50 thousand.
Usually the top 25 thousand candidates get government MBBS seats. In such a situation, the candidates of top 25 to 50 thousand AIR may not be inclined towards Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy medical systems, but should be interested towards Ayurveda, but it is not so. Only 285 candidates have applied for these courses between the top 30 to 40 thousand.
This number is 228 between the top 40 to 50 thousand. It is clear from this that even the Indian medical system Ayurveda has not been able to attract meritorious candidates for admission.
Ayurveda course needs brands like AIIMS Delhi and IIT for prestige. According to the charismatic working of AIIMS and IIT, Ayurveda course needs to be re-launched by incorporating modernity and technology.
Its curriculum should be re-designed according to the modern lifestyle and presented in Sanskrit and Hindi as well as English.
There is also a need to bring the packaging of medicines to the current form while keeping their original form alive. Ayurveda surgery should also be upgraded and modernized. Efforts should be made to bring them at par with MBBS.
