Breaking News! NEET UG 2024 SC Hearing – NTA to Cancel Grace Marks Given to 1563 Candidates

To Offer Re-Test to These 1563 Candidates on 23 June

NEET UG 2024 SC Hearing

In the midst of the NEET-UG 2024 controversy, the Centre has informed the Supreme Court today that it will cancel the grace marks awarded to 1563 students.

The Union Government’s counsel informed the Court that these students will be notified of their actual scores, without the grace marks, and will be given the option to take a re-test.

If they opt out of the re-test, their scores from the exam held on May 5 will be considered.

As per the media reports, Advocate Kanu Agarwal, representing the Union Government, explained to a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that a panel constituted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) decided to cancel the compensatory marks to address students’ concerns. \

The panel found that the awarding of grace marks resulted in an unfair advantage, as they were intended only for unanswered questions due to lost time. Consequently, the committee recommended canceling the scorecards of the affected students and notifying them of their actual marks.

After Hearing the Arguments, the Bench Dictated The Following Order:

The petitioner who had appeared for NEET-UG 2024 has raised a grievance regarding the grant of compensatory marks to 1563 candidates using the normalisation formula where, at the examination centres, the candidates who were not allowed 3 hours 20 minutes time admissible to them were permitted to take their examination for lesser time.

The compensatory marks have been awarded based on the recommendation of a Grievance Redressal Committee relying upon a judgment of this Court in the case of Disha Panchal vs.Union of India and others.

This decision to award compensatory marks had faced challenges. Another committee, appointed by the NTA, re-evaluated the issue and presented its recommendations. It suggested canceling the scorecards of the affected students and conducting a re-examination for them.

The re-test, likely to be held on June 23, will allow affected candidates to improve their scores, with results expected before June 30 to facilitate timely counseling.

Acknowledging the Union Government and NTA’s stance, the Court disposed of one petition challenging the grace marks while issuing notice on another petition alleging a paper leak.

These petitions, along with others raising concerns about the NEET-UG 2024 results, were consolidated for further consideration.

In summary, the Court addressed three petitions questioning the NEET-UG 2024 results, particularly the grant of grace marks, amidst allegations of irregularities.

While one petition regarding grace marks was resolved, others highlighting broader issues remain pending.
