NEET UG 2025 – 7,006 MBBS Seats Increased this Year

Admissions are Available on 123700 Seats, Admissions are Suspended for 1,056 Seats

MBBS seats in the country are increasing every year. This year, an increase has been recorded, reflecting which the National Medical Commission has released a complete seat matrix. According to this released seat matrix, 7,006 new MBBS seats have been added for the 2025-26 academic session.

Career counseling expert of ALLEN Career Institute informed that last year, there were 1,17,750 MBBS seats for which admissions were offered. Now with the addition of 7,006 new seats, the total number of MBBS seats has touched figure of 124,756.

However, during renewal, admissions are currently not permitted for 1,056 seats in the old medical colleges. Consequently, the admission process is being conducted for 123700 seats until the second round of counseling.

4680 MBBS Seats Increased in Private Colleges, with 1,052 Seats Barred

According to the expert, 15 new private medical colleges have approved 1,600 MBBS seats. Similarly, 3080 seats have been increased in 53 old colleges. This total has increased to 4,680, but admissions are barred for 1,052. Of these, 800 seats in five private medical colleges have not been renewed.

Furthermore, 252 seats in seven medical colleges have been reduced. Combined, there are 1,052 seats for which counseling is currently not permitted, even though admissions were made to these seats last year.

2,326 Government Seats Increased, Including 156 at AIIMS and JIPMER

Regarding government MBBS seats, there has been an increase of 2,326 in new medical colleges and existing medical colleges. Eighteen new government medical colleges are set to open their first batches with 1,200 new MBBS seats for the 2025-26 session. 970 MBBS seats have been added to 23 existing state government colleges for the 2025-26 session, while 156 seats have been added to four central institutes.

These include 25 at AIIMS Jodhpur, 38 at Vijaypur, Jammu, and 50 at Guwahati, and 43 at JIPMER, Pondicherry. The admission process is currently suspended for four seats. Admissions were made to these seats last year.

Private College Seats have Doubled Compared to Government Colleges

Expert stated that this year’s increase in MBBS seats in private medical collages has more than doubled compared to government colleges. Of the 7,006 seats added, government seats represent 33.20% (2,326), while private seats represent 66.80% (4,680). In 2024, of the 1.17 lakh seats, private colleges represent 48.63% (57,265), while government seats represent 51.37% (60,485). This gap is narrowing in 2025. Of the 1,23,700 seats currently available for admission, government seats represent 50.77% (62,807), while private colleges represent 49.22% (60,893).

Admissions have been suspended for 1,056 seats. Adding these, the total number of seats is 124756, with government seats representing 50.34 percent (62,811), while private seats represent 49.65 percent (61,945). Consequently, the gap between government and private college seats is narrowing.

1,056 Seats are Being Reduced in this Way

1,056 seats have been reduced in 16 colleges that have not yet received NMC approval for the 2025 counseling. This is due to court matters and renewals. Of these, only four seats have been reduced in four government medical colleges, while the remaining 1,052 seats are in 12 existing private medical colleges.

MBBS Seats have Increased by 137 Percent in 12 Years

According to expert, there were 52,110 MBBS seats in 2013. These seats were continuously increasing, and by 2016, the number of seats had risen to 59,812. After this, admissions will be offered for 117750 seats in 2024 and 123700 seats in 2025.

In the 12 years from 2013 to 2025, the number of seats has increased by more than 137 percent. The highest increase in these 12 years was in 2019, with 12,297 seats added in just one year. In 2022, the number of seats increased by 11652.
