Overview of CBSE’s New Two-Examination System
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced the implementation of a two-examination system for Class 10 students from the 2025–26 academic session.
The new structure aims to reduce board exam pressure on students, provide opportunities for better performance, and make the evaluation process more transparent. In a recent national webinar held on November 20, the Board clarified several key points related to this change.

Two-session Board Exams: When and How Will They Be Conducted?
Under the new system, Class 10 students will have the opportunity to take board exams twice each year.

First Board Exam (February–March):

- Compulsory for all students.
- This will be considered the main examination.

Second Board Exam (May):

- Completely optional.
- Only students who need to improve their scores or who have to appear for compartment exams will be eligible.
- This framework ensures that students have the opportunity to improve their performance twice in the same year.
Best Marks will be included in the Final Result
CBSE has clarified that if a student takes both exams, their best score will be included in the final result. This feature relieves students of unnecessary pressure and encourages them to improve naturally.
Opportunity to Improve Marks: Re-Examination for up to 3 Subjects
From 2026, students can re-appear in a maximum of three subjects for the second exam. This option will be available only in subjects where the external assessment weightage exceeds 50 percent. These primarily include the following subjects:
- Science
- Mathematics
- Social Science
- Languages
This measure allows students to work on their weak areas and achieve better results in the same year.
Compartment Exam Rules
- CBSE has also provided clear guidelines regarding compartment exams:
- If a student fails in one or two subjects, they can appear for the second exam under the Compartment Category.
- If they fail in three or more subjects, they will be classified as Essential Repeat.
- Such students will not be allowed to appear for the second exam.
- They will have to reappear for the main exam in the next academic year.
- These rules ensure that students who require minor corrections have the opportunity to appear in the same year.
When will the Results be Declared?
CBSE has also set the result deadlines for both sessions:
- First Exam Result: April
- Second Exam Result: June
This system ensures timely admission processes and availability of academic documents for both schools and students. Students will be able to register for the improvement exam only after the results of the first session are released, after which the board will prepare the final list of candidates.
Key Points Raised in the Webinar
In the national webinar, CBSE Chairperson Rahul Singh clarified that this system is in line with the best educational models adopted internationally. The webinar answered questions from school heads, teachers, parents, and students. The board also stated that emails and FAQ sections will be continuously updated to address any doubts or suggestions.
